Twenty-five years ago, thanks largely
to my husband, who, when I said, "That looks interesting", went out and
bought a floor loom and a good 'how-to' book. Hence came the challenge!
I am principally self-taught.
Reading, good advice, encouragement and requests have been my driving
forces. Color and texture, both visual and tactile, are my principal
focus, with a little complex structure thrown in. Natural fibers,
wool, mohair, silk, alpaca, and soy are my favorites. My latest
material is qiviut, the naturally shed under wool from the musk ox, very
luxurious and 8 times warmer than sheep's wool.
My inventory includes scarves, shawls,
runners, baby blankets, throws, and an occasional wall hanging. "Rag
bags" woven from fabric strips in various shapes and sizes with
embellishment have been a mainstay for me.
I have shown my work at limited
wholesale outlets and occasional craft shows, but my favorite venue
continues to be The Artworks which has afforded me the
opportunity to interact with so many talented and interesting people.
My life is full with an encouraging
husband (he even bought me a second loom), five great sons, terrific
daughters-in-law, an amazing grandson, a bevy of animals and a satisfying
job in a hospital pharmacy. Weaving has added another great
dimension to my life and provides me with an excellent excuse to 'sit
down'.
