My introduction to cross stitch was,
quite literally, a chance encounter.
Working for the Salvation Army after
college, I met and befriended an elderly woman named Freda. Freda loved
crafts of all kinds and had the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met. I
could always be sure when I checked in on her that she would be hard at
work making something – and always for someone other than herself. As
Christmas neared, I began searching for a gift that I could make just for
her. Purely by chance, I happened upon a small cross stitch kit entitled
“Freida the Snow Woman.” The picture of the completed ornament - depicting
a rosy-cheeked snow woman in bright winter attire - even seemed to capture
her personality. (In my excitement, however, I hadn’t stopped to consider
the fact that I had no idea how to cross stitch!) Progress was painfully
slow at first, but once I caught on, I was hooked.
Eleven years later, I can almost
literally say that that a day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t done at least
a little stitching. I’ve completed hundreds of pieces ranging in size from
half an inch to close to two feet. Some I’ve sold, a few I’ve kept, but
most have been given as gifts to family and friends. Anyone who has ever
cross stitched can attest to the fact that it truly is a work of “heart” –
depending on its size, a single piece can take over two years to complete!
