I received my
Bachelors degree in Art Education with a dual major in Psychology from
Nazareth College, and later attended Syracuse University for my Masters in
Art Education. I have been an Art Educator in local schools since
1985. I have been teaching Art Education for BOCES since 1999. My
placement is the Westmoreland Elementary.
Throughout my career
as an Art Educator I explored a variety of media, but I always returned to
pottery. Since 1983, when I enrolled in my first hand building
class, I knew that the clay was my media of choice.
Recently, I have
sought to redefine what I am expressing through the process of hand
building using coils and a variety of other forms found in nature. I
have been influenced by Native American coil pots, but unlike most of
these examples, I do not smooth the outside of the piece, only the inside.
I am also intrigued
by the clay work of early Mexican and South American civilizations.
These rather primitive pieces address a connection between the artist and
nature. I choose bright colors for the inside of a piece which
contrasts the dark exterior. Black engobe is applied and then
sponged off the exterior surface of the piece to create an antiqued look.
Antiquing emphasizes the texture of the coils and shapes.
My work is functional, yet sculptural.
It is my hope that
you enjoy having the piece as much as I enjoyed the process of creating
it.
If you are interested in seeing more of my pieces, please
